Economy woes flood the daily news, along with concerns about increasing unemployment rates. However, computer tech graduates are in the enviable position of entering a career field with a strong demand for qualified employees. According to the National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses, the job outlook for computer graduates declined by 36,000 jobs in November 2008; however, in December 2008 that number started to bounce back. In the short term, the job outlook for computer tech graduates appears to be returning to the normal 3.85 million plus jobs range.
According to Job Web’s article “How You Fit into the Tight Job Market”, college graduates with computer degrees are in great demand to fill entry-level computer jobs. One of the largest employers seeking computer tech graduates is the U.S. federal government. The war on terror has brought an increased demand for advanced technological resources to address security concerns of the U.S. This in turn has increased the demand for employees with computer degrees, especially at the entry-level.
Computer tech graduates who are able to obtain appropriate security clearances will find the demand for their services are greater than the supply. According to Military.com Veteran Careers’ article “Top 10 Cities for Defense Jobs”, defense contractors need graduates with computer degrees for entry and experienced jobs. Specialties these employers seek include computer-based modeling and simulation, security computer specialists, information management, software and systems engineers and general information technology.
In the private sector, the long term job outlook for computer graduates is strong in several sub-fields of computer technology. According to the New York Job Source’s article “Computer Support Specialists and Systems Administrators,” even with the down turn in the economy the job outlook for computer tech graduates in network and computer systems administration is growing faster than other areas of computer technology. This increase in jobs is expected to be greater than 25 percent through 2016. A second area high in demand for graduates with computer degrees is computer security specialists. This demand is due to concerns with viruses, hackers, terrorists, etc.
Even with the economic decline, the job outlook for computer tech graduates is still strong with more than 3.8 million computer tech jobs.
