network security forms
How do I set up security on my netgear 54mbps wireless access point WG602 v4?
At the minute it says unsecured network. How can I make it a secured network?
When I try to add WEP or any other form off password to it it says that the settings saved on my computer do not match those of the access point and my computer wont then connect to the internet.
How do I find out what security settings are for my access point?
Whenever I type the IP address that is for my access point into the browser it always says the connection is taking too long to respond, it times out.
Hello,
(ANS) No.1 OK!! so to start with here you must login into the Netgears administrative pages (set-up or configuration pages) and connect to the router using the Ethernet cable provided. I think it comes with a blue colored patch cable.
No.2 Once you are logged into the routers configuration pages, look for security protocols (i.e. WAP or WEP or WEP-PSK, IPSEC etc) or security settings.
No.3 To secure the router you MUST use one of the security protocols, these protocols provide a way to encrypt your routers connection between your PC, laptop or desktop machine & the router itself. This means that when you use it in wireless mode the radio signal cannot be broken into by someone else who hasn’t been given permission.
No.4 To secure your router & your network you need x2 specific pieces of information set up these are as follows :- a) SSID and b) Security protocol or also known as encryption.
No.5 I recommend that you use the strongest method of encryption which in your Netgear router should be WEP-PSK. This method allows you to create a totally unique phrase or statement which is then (input, written in) turned into a long complex encryption key. Only you will know what it is, + you should write it down if its complex so you can remember it in future.
An example might be:- “I love the sound of the cows in the field in the morning” this is then made into an encryption key. But keep it simple or memorable to make your life easier.
**The SSID (service set identifier) is just the label or name of your network or router which is seen on the public facing side of the internet.
**Use WEP-PSK because its more complex & therefore more secure for the router.
No.6 once the router is secured you must make sure your wireless adapter (laptop or PC) uses the exact same SSID & encryption key as the router otherwise if the PC & router SSID & Keys don’t match exactly you wont get internet access.
Hope that helps?
Regards Ivan.
